Nels Christianson joined the Board in 2009 after judging that year’s Poetry Out Loud Contest in Madera County where he learned about CPITS’ vital role in that program.  Nels is a native of Merced County and has been working to expand the reach of California Poets in the Schools in the San Joaquin Valley.  Nels is a published poet and Area Coordinator for Los Angeles County.  He successfully co-coordinated the recent 2-year student poets program as a CPITS-Beyond Baroque collaboration in Venice.  Nels has a B.A. degree from UCSB in political science and Hispanic Civilization.  He has done graduate work both at UCLA and Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and is fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese.  Nels recently retired from the International Relations department at UCLA Medical Center.  Now he spends time writing, making pots, gardening and traveling to visit cacti and succulents in habitat around the world.
