Poet-Teacher Update: Sandra Anfang

Updated: Apr 15, 2022

Poetry is alive and well in Sonoma County. It’s been an exciting few months both in an out of the classroom. A poem from one of Sandra's Kid Street Charter School fifth-grade students, Melody Maxfield Cortez, has been selected for the upcoming Rattle Young Poets Anthology 2022. The poem is entitled “Old Toys.” The selection process was rigorous for this publication: fifty poems were chosen out of thousands of submissions.

Rivertown Poets, a reading series hosted by Sandra, continues to meet virtually on the first Monday of each month. On April 4th, our Sonoma County Youth Poet Laureate, Ella Wen, featured, along with the seasoned, well-known poet, Dorothy Gilbert. Rivertown Poets is planning for a tentative return to live readings on the first Monday in June, which marks the ninth anniversary as a series.

Sandra has had several poems published in journals and anthologies, and received several awards. “Elijah” and “Little Black Dress” appear in the latest issue of The MacGuffin. A cento of Ferlinghetti poems was published in the new Ferlinghetti tribute anthology from Jambu Press. And Sandra won a second-place award in the San Francisco International Haiku Contest and well as a third-place award for her prose poem, “Twirling,” in the Soul-Making Keats contest.
